School Refusal is an increasingly growing area of concern for young people, their families and schools. School Refusal behaviours are often complex and driven by a combination of factors and can present differently for each young person.

Understanding the function of behaviour can help to clarify what is driving the young person’s school refusal behaviours. It is important to understand the function of behaviour in order to target supports and strategies that address the individual needs and circumstances of the young person and their family.

Early intervention and targeted supports are crucial in promoting school attendance. Working in partnership with young people, their families and the school support team will give young people the best chance of experiencing success in their schooling.

This page provides information and tools to professionals working with young people who are displaying school refusal behaviours, their families and schools.
